Margaret “Maggie” Greene Harris, lovingly known by her grandchildren as Big Mama, 89, passed away on Sunday August 25, 2024, at home surrounded by her family.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 30, 2024 at Hillside Cemetery. A visitation will follow from 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium.
Maggie was born on March 21, 1935, in Greensboro, NC to Alton Cutchin Greene Sr., and Mattie Neil McLeod Greene. She was a proud resident of Maxton, NC and Laurinburg, NC, and was a graduate of Maxton High School. She attended Women’s College of Greensboro, NC.
She married Paul Preston Harris, Jr. on June 9, 1956 in Maxton, NC. She worked at Carolina Power & Light in Maxton, and Harris Ice & Fuel Company. After moving from Laurinburg to Seven Lakes, NC, Maggie opened the Pump House Restaurant and Gift Shop. Maggie and her husband also owned Scarborough’s Marina, Restaurant, and Motel on the Santee Cooper Lakes, SC, where her famous cheeseburgers became a legend! Maggie chose to return home to Laurinburg in 1989, where she worked at Scotia Village as an activities director for skilled nursing, and assisted living, along with a travel agent at Travel Time. Her community at Sherbrooke Townhouses thrived under her leadership as the property manager of the HOA.
Her family and travel were her two biggest passions, along with being an active member of First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg. Maggie always had the ability to be a fighter in life. Her favorite trip was touring Scotland to learn more about her McLeod clan heritage.
She was preceded in death by her father: Alton Cutchin Greene, Sr., mother: Mattie Neil McLeod Greene, sister: Martha Neil Greene, and husband: Paul Preston Harris, Jr. She is survived by two sons: Paul Preston Harris III (Susan Jernigan), James “Mac” McLeod Harris, a daughter: Martha Neal Harris Harvell (Bob Harvell), and a brother, Alton Cutchin Greene, Jr. (Gail).
She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Maggie Harvell Soles, Rob Harvell, Ashley Harris Schloss, Preston Harris, Tyler Harris, Braxton Harris, and Alec Harris, along with eight great grandchildren, and a very special friend, Betty Frostick.
The family would like to thank Scotland Regional Hospice, Carolina Hearts Home Care, and Scottish Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation facility for all of their love and support during this time.
