September 22, 1921 — June 17, 2014

Laurinburg

Margaret Custis Cromartie Calhoun, 92, died June 17, 2014 at Morrison Manor.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Church in the Pines Presbyterian Church in Laurel Hill, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Born September 22, 1921 in Bladen County, Margaret was the daughter of the late Angus and Annie Belle Black Cromartie. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Malcolm Patterson Calhoun.

Margaret graduated from Flora Macdonald College in 1941 with a degree in science and home economics. After graduation she worked as a home demonstration agent in Robeson County and formed many lasting friendships. In 1944 she married Malcolm Calhoun, minister of Saint Pauls Presbyterian Church. Margaret was the perfect complement to Malcolm – a great source of support and an active partner in church ministry.

She received her master's degree in the teaching of biology from the University of Virginia. A biology and chemistry teacher in the public school system, she influenced many of her students to pursue studies in the areas of science and medicine.

An active member of the Presbyterian Church USA, she was an elder, choir and circle member, and served on church and Presbytery committees. She also presided one term as moderator of Coastal Carolina Presbytery. During retirement in Laurinburg, she took a vital interest in the Scotland County community and in St. Andrews University. She authored a church history, contributed to her husband's memoirs, and chaired the Scotland County Heritage Book Committee. In her spare time she took part in club activities, traveled widely, enjoyed good friends, and loved the company of family.

Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Calhoun of Laurinburg and Anne Gentry of Davidson; her son, Mac Calhoun of Richmond, VA; her granddaughters, Katie Gentry and Laurin Titus and husband, Derek and their two children, Charlie and Mac.

Memorials are requested for St. Andrews University, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, NC 28352 or the Church in the Pines, PO Box 69, Laurel Hill, NC 28351.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.
