MAGGIE SARAH JONES ERWIN
Maggie Jones Erwin, a resident of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, died September 10, 2011 at Morehead City, North Carolina.
Born, Maggie Sarah Jones on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at Jones Manor in Townsend, Virginia, she is survived by two sons, Evan Alexander Erwin, III and wife Sally Edwards Erwin, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Frank Woodson Erwin and wife Christine Sharron Erwin, of Emerald Isle, North Carolina. Two grandchildren, Evan Alexander Erwin, IV and his wife Jacqueline Valdes Erwin, and Edward Covington Erwin, also survive.
She was also loved and will be missed by her dear friend Novis Quailey Rodriguez, and her extended family, Donald Bruce Hanks, Jr. and his wife Kimberly Moxley Hanks , Matthew Richard Hanks, Nathan Christopher Hanks and Nicole Marie Poulos, and their children Donald Bruce (Trey) Hanks, III, Madelyn Rose Hanks, Nathan Christopher Hanks, II, and Nikos Corydon Hanks.
Daughter of Ralph Woodson Jones and Jennie Hallett Jones of Townsend, Virginia, she was preceded in death by her husband Evan Alexander Erwin, Jr., M.D. and by three sisters, Barbara Anne Jones, Elizabeth Jones Newton, Susie Jones Fitchett and five brothers, Ralph Woodson (Buster) Jones, Jr., Henry Seldon (H.S.) Jones Thomas Elton Jones, Francis Irving Jones, and Curtis O. Hallett Jones.
Mrs. Erwin, born Maggie Sarah Jones on January 24, 1919, attended Capeville Methodist Church, graduated from Capeville High School and Duke University in 1940. At Duke University she was a member of Sigma Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi and Sigma Delta Pi sororities. She later attended graduate school and graduated with a masters degree from the UNC Chapel Hill School of Library Science in 1941. She married Dr. Evan Alexander Erwin, Jr. on October 23, 1942 and lived most of her adult life in the home given by Robert Rowe Covington and Harriet Norment Winston Covington, to their daughter, Bessie Norment Covington upon the occasion of her marriage to Dr. Evan Alexander Erwin, Sr. in 1917. Spending most of her adult life in Laurinburg, North Carolina she was active in the Auxiliary to the Medical Society of Scotland County and the North Carolina Medical Society. She was an active member of the Junior Service League, the Thursday Afternoon Book Club and the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
Always an avid reader and interested in those around her and the world around her, she and her husband gave her children the gift of education and the charge to build upon education and to never stop learning. She taught her children to be responsible and accountable, to not fear failure but to learn from it and never give up. She attempted to make the lives of others around her better each day.
She leaves many friends, many smiles and a wonderful example by which we may live.
Graveside services are at Hillside Cemetery, Laurinburg, North Carolina, Monday, September 12, 2011 at 2:30 pm.
