Lucius Sayre Page (Buddy), 76, died Sunday, September 12, at his home in Sun City, Fort Mill, SC after a year-long battle with melanoma.
Buddy was born August 5, 1934 in Laurinburg, NC. He was the only child of Lucius Sayre Page, Sr. and Bernice Addie Jones Page. Buddy graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1952 where he was a talented baseball player. He played catcher on the 1951 Class AA State Championship team and the 1950 American Legion State Championship runner-up team.
He also played football, basketball, and Tuba for the marching band.
Buddy attended Wake Forest College and played baseball but his baseball career ended his freshman year at Chapel Hill when he broke his leg in two places sliding into second base. Buddy was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He graduated in the ROTC program in 1956 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army attaining the rank of Captain. He liked to tell his children the Army taught him the importance of being on time after being 5 minutes late for roll call once.
Buddy retired from Lucent Technologies (Western Electric and Bell Laboratories) after a career spanning 36 years that moved his family to Texas, New Jersey, Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, and Burlington, NC. He and Ann cultivated many life-long friendships that became their family. Upon retirement he served as a member of the Supervisory Committee at Truliant Federal Credit for over ten years.
The one place on Earth that Buddy loved more than anywhere was Holden Beach, NC. He spent his summers at the beach with his three aunts while his parents ran the dry cleaners in Laurinburg. When he was able, he built his first summer home on the beach and then spent all his vacations and spare time at Holden Beach. He was known for playing his ukulele and leading the singing at happy hours.
uddy married his childhood friend, Linda Ann Jones, also from Laurinburg. They have been married for 53 years. Buddy is survived by his wife Linda Ann Jones, his daughter Jean Page Kreisher and her husband Rob of Charlotte, NC, his daughter-in-law Claiborne Page of Marvin, NC, and his daughter, Linda Lee Page of Charlotte, NC. He is predeceased by his son Samuel Phillip Page. His grandchildren include Matthew Arlington Kreisher, Phillip Sayre Kreisher, Sarah Ann Page, Lee Claiborne Page, and Katherine Alexander Page.
A celebration of Buddy's life will be held at First Baptist Church, East Church Street, Laurinburg, NC at 11:00 am after a graveside service for family at 10:00 am at Hillside Cemetery.
