Lucille Odom Chance

June 6, 1914 — September 24, 2009

Laurinburg

Lucille Odom Chance, 95, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009.

A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Linda Nelson. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the memorial service.

She is survived by a son, Freddie Chance of Charleston, WV; a daughter, Betty Decembrina and husband, John of Birmingham, AL; two sisters, Frances Marie Owens of Asheboro and Stella Louise O'Donnell of Barstow, CA; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Lucille was born in Bennettsville, SC to the late Daniel W. and Martha Jane Stubbs Odom. Her first job was at Sanitary CafAC. AC.n Bennettsville, and she later became a dietician at Covington Street School. Later she worked with the Ingraham Clock Company, and after retirement she worked with Webb Floral Co.

She is known as the first certified woman baseball umpire in North Carolina. Lucille was a proficient umpire for many little league games, adding the zest of a professional umpire to inspire the athletes. It never hurt that she also rewarded the players with bubble gum.

Her family remembers her gardening at home, her love of yard work from dawn to dusk, her swing on the front porch, blueberry pie, homemade biscuits, playing catch, homemade ice cream, and walking across Presbyterian Park to church every Sunday. Her daughter Betty recalled the time Lucille drove her Model A to pick her up at the cinema while chopping down on a cigar, and every Saturday night getting her hair rolled for church the following day.

Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Living Word, 1925 S. Main St., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or Hospice, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 29353.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
