Loma McLaurin McQueen, 94, of Laurinburg, NC, died on December 5, 2011 at Hospice of Scotland County's Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, NC. Loma was born on March 26, 1917 in Tatum, SC, the second child of the late James W. McLaurin and Loma Easterling McLaurin. Following her father's death, her mother married the late Aubrey P. Hammond, Sr.
Loma is survived by her two sons, Dr. Donald H. McQueen, III (Ivey) of Rock Hill, SC and Dr. James A. McQueen (Linda) of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a brother, Aubrey P. Hammond, Jr. of Laurinburg, NC; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Creech (Will) of Charlotte, NC, Audrey Fulp of Fort Mill, SC, John McQueen of Rock Hill, SC, Tracie Thomas of Charlotte, NC, Madison McQueen of Rock Hill, SC, Jason McQueen (Forrest) of Austin, TX and Emily McQueen-Borden (Kara) of New Orleans, LA; six great-grandchildren, Loma Ash and Angus Ash of Charlotte, NC; Hayden McQueen, Colby McQueen and Riley McQueen of Charleston, SC and Greta McQueen-Borden of New Orleans, LA.; a niece, Candy Avery (George) of Beaverton, OR and a nephew, Pitt Hammond of Laurinburg, NC.
Loma graduated from Laurinburg High School and attended Winthrop College. On January 12, 1939 she married Donald Howard McQueen, Jr. Loma was a devoted and loving wife until Donald's death in 1999. She was active in her community serving on the Laurinburg City School System Board of Education and as a volunteer for Hospice of Scotland County. In her state she served on the Board of the Roanoke Island Historical Society and was Chairman of the Lost Colony Gift Shop Committee for many years. In her church she was a member of the chancel choir, a Circle Leader, President of the Women of the Church (1973), a Deacon, and a Ruling Elder. Loma was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Women of the Church in 1977, and was recognized in 2009 as an Elder Emeritus of the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
A private interment at Hillside Cemetery will be followed by a celebration of Loma's life and memorial service officiated by Dr. W. Neal Carter, Rev. Elizabeth Forester, and Rev. John G. Cottingham at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church on Saturday December 10, 2011 at 11:00 am. The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
