Mrs. Lena Adelaide Thompson Womble, 90, formerly of Wagram died Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Scotia Village after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Montpelier Presbyterian Church in Wagram officiated by the Rev. Holly Russell and the Rev. Dr. Howard Whitehurst. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Lena is survived by her devoted husband Dr. Edwin Womble of the home; her daughter and son-in-law Olivia W. Griffin and husband, Dr. Richard Griffin of Hickory; her sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew Womble and wife, Emily McNeill Womble of Laurinburg, Marvin Womble and wife, Cynthia Edge Womble of Laurinburg, and Theron Womble and wife, Peggy Jordan Womble of Sanford. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Karen Reese and husband Evan of Asheville, Sarah Griffin-Green and husband, Zachary of Greensboro, Mary Griffin of Brown Summit, Mary Beth Buie and husband, Parks of Apex, Graham Womble and wife, Melanie of Laurinburg, Sharon Hendrix and husband, John of Lexington, SC, Seaton Womble of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Seth Womble and wife, Katie of Morrisville, Jordan Womble and wife, Amy of Charlotte, 2 step-grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Edith Womble Boland of Laurinburg and Frances Womble Fulp of Newton.

She was born October 1, 1916, in York County, SC to Lillie Smith Thompson and Andrew Livingston Thompson and grew up in the Union Community of Gaston County, NC. Lena graduated from Ashley High School in Gastonia and then graduated from Flora MacDonald College with a degree in home economics. She taught high school at Glade Valley School and at Belmont High School.

In 1944 she married Edwin C. Womble and eventually settled in his home town of Wagram, NC, after WWII where she raised their children and supported her husband in his medical practice. She was active in Montpelier Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder emeritus and an honorary life member of the Women of the Church. In addition, she served on several committees for the Fayetteville Presbytery. She also participated many years in the Scotland County Homemakers Extension Club and was a life member of the National Homemakers Council. For many years she served in the Cub Scout program. She devoted her life to nurturing her family and to serving her church and community. Lena and her husband moved to Scotia Village in Laurinburg in 2000.

Lena was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Rev. Leslie Thompson, James Thompson, Tom Thompson, and her sister Lillie Mae Jackson.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village.
