Mr. Lauder Eugene "Gene" Barber, 74, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Autumn Care of Raeford.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 14 at the Church in the Pines in Laurel Hill officiated by the Rev. Dr. Gene Miller. Burial will follow with full Masonic Rites at Hillside Cemetery.
Mr. Barber was born in Scotland County on November 19, 1933 to Lauder and Annie Mae Williamson Barber.
Gene attended Laurel Hill High School where he was active in sports, playing football, and baseball. After graduation from Laurel Hill High School, Gene attended Applachian State University on a football scholarship. He then enlisted in the US Army during the Korean War for 2 years. He then returned to Pembroke Junior College and then Pembroke State University where he played baseball as a play/manager.
He returned to Laurel Hill High School after graduation from college and taught math and science and coached football, baseball and men and women's basketball and was the Director of Morgan Mills Recreation Department. Gene was one of the first instructors of the Governor's School in Cullawhee.
His employment branched out to Morgan Mills and Springs Credit Union in Lancaster, SC and Biscoe, NC where he oversaw the operations of the office. He was also a district supervisor for Life of Virginia Insurance Company and served as Scotland County Tax Supervisor for 17 years.
He leaves behind his daughter, Annette Lee Barber Pierce and husband, Tim, and grandson Nolan Alexander Pierce of Laurel Hill; a close cousin, Earl Bradley and a close friend Lynwood Horne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Stone Barber and two brothers, Cledius Barber and Alex Barber.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 13, 7-9 pm at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
