Lacy Ray Thompson, 81, of Mt. Gilead passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Autumn Care of Biscoe, surrounded by his loving family.
A funeral service, will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at Holly Mount Baptist Church in Mt. Gilead, officiated by Tony Sedberry and Rev. Ben Hall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. prior to the service in the church.
Born May 13, 1945, in Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Lacy Oscar and Katie McClendon Thompson. Lacy was a longtime farmer and was known for his BBQ. He loved to hunt, especially coon and rabbits. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Lacy was a past member of Post 127 Blackmer Lodge for over 45 years in Mt. Gilead and a past post Worshipful Brother. His accomplishments were many and well achieved. He was retired from the NC Department of Transportation with over 20 years of service. In 1983, Lacy was Montgomery County’s Farmer of the Year, a former board member of Pekin Fire Department, a deacon of Holly Mount Baptist Church, and a member of the Montgomery County Cattlemen’s Association.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lowder Thompson of the home; sons, Mark Allen Thompson (Crystal) of Norwood and Matthew Bryan Thompson (Hope) of Mt. Gilead; sister, Joyce Sedberry (Jerry) of Mt. Gilead; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, David Ray Thompson; and grandson, Dawson Bryan Thompson.
Memorials may be made to the Holly Mount Baptist Church Benevolent Fund, 1947 Thickety Creek Rd., Mt. Gilead, NC 27306.
