Kitty Usher Beacham

Mrs. Kitty Adams Usher Beacham of Laurinburg, died May 23, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 25, 2012, at First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg, North Carolina , officiated by Reverend Gene Tyson and Reverend Leon Newton. Visitation will be at 12:30 pm in the Nettie Hammond Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow the service at Hillside Cemetery.

Mrs. Beacham is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Rose Beacham (Kay) Ansley; her son, Robert Martin (Bert) Beacham, Jr., and his wife Jenette Phillips Beacham; her grandchildren, Robert Martin Beacham, III and Emma Gray Beacham, all of Laurinburg; and her brother, Noah Alfred Usher, Jr. of Newtonville, South Carolina.

Mrs. Beacham was born on January 14, 1924, in Newtonville, South Carolina, to Rosa Nell Newton Terry Usher and Noah Alfred Usher, Sr. She graduated as valedictorian from Fletcher High School in McColl, South Carolina, in May of 1941. Mrs. Beacham attended Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, North Carolina, and graduated in May of 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. After graduation she moved to Laurinburg, where she worked in the bookkeeping department of Waverly Mills. On March 14, 1947, she married Robert Martin Beacham, Sr. of Laurinburg, at her childhood church, Boykin United Methodist Church. After her marriage she became a member of First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg. Mrs. Beacham continued to work outside of the home until the birth of her children, at which time she became a full-time mother and homemaker. After the death of her husband on January 19, 1967, Mrs. Beacham began her career as a teacher at Covington Street School; she subsequently taught middle-school math at Central School and Shaw Middle School. During this time she attended St. Andrews Presbyterian College to attain her mathematics certification. After retiring from the Scotland County school system in the mid- 1980's, she taught at Marlboro Academy in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Upon her final retirement she enjoyed traveling, particularly with her Flora McDonald friends. She especially enjoyed hosting the annual gathering of Flora McDonald and Presbyterian Junior College alumna in her home. Mrs. Beacham dearly loved the special times she spent with her two grandchildren. After moving to Scotia Village in 2007, she renewed old friendships and developed new ones.

The family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 101 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or St. Andrews University, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, NC 28352.
