Khan Vail Perkins

Khan Vail Perkins, 86, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012.
A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter and the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.
He is survived by his daughter Betty Perkins McGee of Laurinburg; his son, Tom Perkins (Connie) of Rose Hill; his grandchildren, Melissa Gleason (Jack), Nancy Tucker (Walter), Isaac Perkins (Katherine, and Jeremy Perkins; five great grandchildren, John and Taylor Gleason, Kylie and Noah Tucker, and Benjamin Perkins; he is also survived by a brother, Kimrey Perkins and a sister, Martha Brown; and special friends, Lavona Hyatt and Phil McGee. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Albert, Thurman, and Theodore.
Mr. Perkins was born in Wayne County on May 5, 1926, a son of the late Isaac Thomas and Mamie Aycock Perkins. He married the late Juanita Herring, his high school sweetheart, and they were together for 57 years.
After graduating from Grantham High School he served two years in the US Army, attended Western Carolina Teacher's College (now University), and transferred to NCSU where he graduated in 1951 with a BS degree in Agriculture Education. After teaching high school agriculture for 3 years, he was employed by the NC Cooperative Extension Service where he served in Person and Caswell counties before accepting the position as chairman of the NCCES in Scotland County in 1965. Mr. Perkins served until his retirement in September 1982. He was the recipient of the National County Agents Association's Distinguished Service Awards in 1980.
He served as an active member of the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, as chairman of the Scotland County Heart Fund, and as a leader in the Kiwanis Club. He was also a faithful volunteer and lifetime member of the Scotland County/American Red Cross Board of Directors.
Most recently he has enjoyed the fellowship with the "Who Cares Breakfast Club" and was with them Friday morning.
Mr. Perkins was especially skilled in woodworking and enjoyed piddling in his backyard shop, restoring and refinishing furniture and caning chairs.
He treasured spending time with family and friends, and many of his precious moments were spent talking with and telling others about his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other family members. His love for and appreciation of family provides a legacy for all.
Visitation will be Monday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Scotia Village and following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
