Mr. Kelly B. Cowey, Sr., 89, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 5:15 a.m.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel.

He is survived by his five children; Margaret Uncapher (John) and Ruth McKenzie (John) of Laurinburg, Betty Smith (late Danny) of Maxton, Virginia Cowey (Albert Willis) of Wagram; and Kelly B. Cowey, Jr. (Penny) of Laurel Hill; two sisters, Frances Dunn of Laurel Hill and Elizabeth Weddle (Lenny) of Richmond, VA; a brother, Bennie Cowey of Spokane, WA; 12 grandchildren; Joseph Uncapher (Lori) and John Kelly Uncapher (Kelly) of Kokomo, IN, James Uncapher (Leann) of Chicago, Kimberly Key (Farron) of Hope Mills, Lenny Smith (Heather) of Maxton, Gerald McKenzie of Laurinburg, Tracey Ansley (Andy) of Marston, Robert Cook (Jill) of Hilton Head, James Cook (Christy) of Myrtle Beach, Walter Cook of Lumberton, and Christopher Cook (Maranda) of Laurel Hill; 21 great grandchildren. Tony Smith preceded his grandfather in death in 2008.

Born January 19, 1920 in Oak City, NC he was a son of the late Charles William and Sadie Stalls Cowey. Kelly was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Wilmington from April 1939 to May 1939 when he was honorably discharged. He was also a World War II veteran serving in the US Army from November 1941 to November 1945 as a Private First Class. He spent most of his service time at the McCaskill Air Base in Maxton, NC and in Panama. He was honorably discharged in November 1945 and was awarded the American Theater Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He married the late Lillian Louise Haire of Cheraw, SC on March 17, 1945. From this union came five children. Kelly was a certified plumber and received a diploma as a Radiotician and Teletrician in 1948. He was well loved in the greater Laurel Hill area and was a reliable handy man.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
