Katherine (Kay) Fryer Alexander of Laurinburg, NC passed away on July 14, 2022. Kay was born on October 2, 1928 to Edward Henry Fryer and Katherine Street Fryer in Nashville, TN. After graduating from Peabody Conservatory, she studied at Vanderbilt University and at the New England Conservatory of Music.
She first caught the eye of William M Alexander, a seminarian preaching in Nashville when she sang a beautiful solo. They married and had three children. The family moved to Laurinburg where Bill taught at St Andrews Presbyterian College and Kay became director of music at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where she served in that position for seven years. She then obtained her teacher certification and served as an educator in the Scotland County school system for 20 years.
Kay had many interests: she was often a soloist in Handel’s Messiah in her younger years and was a gifted pianist. She was a longtime member of the Thursday Afternoon Book Club. She enjoyed entertaining her many friends and loved playing bridge. Kay and Bill loved to travel and took 17 trips abroad with their closest friends from Nashville, TN. She was a loving grandparent and enjoyed taking the grandchildren on trips as well. Even in her last years she maintained a keen interest in local and world affairs. She was a devoted member of Trinity Presbyterian Church which she attended for many years. Kay and Bill retired to Scotia Village in Laurinburg where they loved being amongst their friends and the wonderful staff.
She was predeceased by her husband, William M Alexander; her son, David Leon Alexander; and her grandchildren, Hannah Katherine Gibson and Alexander Brooks Gibson. She is survived by her son, and daughter-in-law, John Edward and Rose Lukac Alexander; her daughter, and son-in-law Susan (Dorrie) and Jackson Vaughan Gibson; and her grandchildren, Stephen David Alexander and Keith Evan Alexander.
