Judson D. Bullard, Jr. of Scotia Village, Laurinburg passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20.
Mr. Bullard, a native son of Laurinburg, was born on January 22, 1921 to Judson D. Bullard, Sr. and Bessie Prevatte Bullard.
Mr. Bullard was educated in the public schools of Laurinburg and attended Elise Academy in Robbins, N.C. graduating in 1939. After graduating from Oak Ridge Military Academy in Guilford County, Mr. Bullard enlisted in the Army Air Corps September 4, 1941 as an Aviation Cadet, Class 42-D and was assigned to the 25 Fighter Squadron in September, 1942 as instructor pilot at Landhi near Karachi. Later he was assigned to the 76th Fighter Squadron, known as The Flying Tigers (commanded by General Claire Lee Chennault), at Lingling, moved to Hengyang, then Suichwan and finally to Kweilin. He was credited with one Zero over Hankow escorting B-25's, and one on intercept near Suichwan. Bullard flew 37 missions in China, 27 in a Curtiss-Wright P-40 and the last 10 missions in a P-51 Mustang. Lt. Colonel Bullard left active duty in November, 1945 but remained an active reservist until his military retirement in 1969.
Married to Helen Mary Walker in July of 1942, the Bullards settled in Laurinburg after World War II. From 1946 until 1959, Mr. Bullard operated Bullard Grocery on East Church Street. After a short stint with Commercial State Bank in their insurance agency, Mr. Bullard moved over to Southern National Bank as head cashier and was later promoted to Vice President, Commercial Lending. After 25 years with Southern National, Mr. Bullard retired and then went to work with Scotland Savings Bank as their Vice President in charge of consumer lending. Mr. Bullard retired from Scotland Savings in 1995 at age 74.
A life-long member of First Baptist Church in Laurinburg, Mr. Bullard served as a choir member, frequent soloist, Sunday School teacher and a Deacon. With a love for church music, Mr. Bullard performed with a Gospel quartet for several years back in the sixties. Mr. Bullard enjoyed singing for others and often performed at weddings, funerals and church functions.
Mr. Bullard was a past city councilman in Laurinburg and was instrumental in hiring Laurinburg's first full time police chief. He was also a past president of the Lions Club, past treasurer of the Scotland County Democratic party, and past chairman of the Scotland County ABC Board. While chairing the ABC Board, Mr. Bullard was instrumental in helping the ABC employees gain eligibility for state retirement benefits for the first time.
Mr. Bullard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen Walker Bullard; his eldest son J. Michael Bullard of Laurinburg; his son, John Walker Bullard (wife Kay) of Pinehurst; a brother, Bill Bullard (wife Beatrice) of Laurinburg; a sister, Madalene B. Stone of Laurinburg; grandchildren Michael Paul Bullard of Greensboro, Robin Bullard Stanfield (husband Will) of Wilmington, Dr. Scott Bullard (wife Shannon) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; J. Patrick Bullard of Savannah, Georgia and six great grandchildren: William and Walker Stanfield and Judson, Desmond, Campbell and Walker Bullard.
A visitation will be held at McDougald Funeral Home, 305 East Church Street, Laurinburg on Sunday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
A Memorial Service will be held at The First Baptist Church, 302 East Church Street, Laurinburg at 11:00 a.m., Monday. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
