Laurinburg, NC – Joseph Thomas Odom, Jr, of Laurinburg, passed away August 8, 2012.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Gene Tyson.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Martha Mathews Odom of Laurinburg; his daughter, Martha Jo Brooks and her husband, Francis Arthur "Terry" Brooks of Greensboro, NC; his son, Joseph Thomas Odom III and his wife, Donna Martin Odom of Clemmons, NC; grandchildren, Allison Odom Arias and her husband, Tomas Domingo Arias of Hoboken, NJ, and Lauren Ashley Odom of Raleigh, NC; sister, Josie Odom Galloway and her husband Herbert E. Galloway, Sr. of Peachtree City, GA.; sister-in law, Hettie Bett Stubbs of Laurinburg; brothers in-law, George Mathews and his wife, Helen of Oak Island and Jack Mathews and his wife, Jan Marie of Laurel Hill.

He was born March 10, 1925 in Red Springs, NC. He was the son of the late Mr. Joseph Thomas Odom, Sr. and Leta Cable Odom. Joe served as a U. S. Marine in the Pacific theater during World War II and was part of the occupation forces in Nagasaki, Japan. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill where he also received a Masters Degree in Education. He began his professional career in Elm City, NC as a teacher and coach. He later became principal then superintendent of the Elm City Schools before taking the position of Assistant Superintendent of the Scotland County School system. He retired as the Associate Superintendent of the Scotland County Schools in 1981.

Joe spent his retirement years playing golf and working in his yard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg. Joe is predeceased by sisters Mattie Helen Dowd, Louise Edwards, and Kathleen Nixon.

A visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village and following the service in the church fellowship hall.
