Laurinburg
Passing from life to eternal life Jonelle Gier left this world on Tuesday, November 19th.
A private and dignified woman, Jonelle was passionate about her church, friends, family, and the arts. Jonelle was an talented seamstress, knitter, baker and gourmet cook. She was a bird and dog lover (cats, not so much). Jonelle was a good listener and enjoyed being social. She was a night owl and didn't like getting up early. She dressed beautifully and was always sure to be wearing jewelry and lipstick.
Jonelle was born in Coffeyville KS March 31, 1923 to Henry and Maude Kitchens. She had a brother named Bert.
In the first part of her life she was the devoted wife of a college professor, living and working at Park College in MO, Austin College in Sherman, TX and St. Andews College in Laurinburg, NC. Acting as house parents, feeding students and organizing their many activities and special events, Jonelle truly enjoyed developing relationships with the students.
The last half of her 90 years were spent in Laurinburg. She worked full time at McNair Seed for over 20 years and formed a lasting friendship with the owners, the Evans family. Jonelle was a devoted member of the Lioness club and her circle group. Her church, Laurinburg Presbyterian, was very important to her; she was active member of the choir and, upon retirement in her 70s, she volunteered her services as a secretary.
Jonelle adored her son Delta David Gier and was proud of his accomplishments as a musician. She travelled to Romania, New York City, and Sioux Falls, SD to hear his concerts and visit with her family. She loved and was proud of her grandchildren, Delta Gabriel and Anna Giulia Gier. Jonelle's holiday boxes of goodies, gifts and handmade sweaters were the joy of every birthday, Christmas, Easter and Valentine's celebration in the Gier household. Her daughter-in-law Angela Corbo Gier is grateful that Jonelle taught her how to knit. Grand daughter Anna is happy to have inherited Jonelle's love of singing.
The last years of Jonelle's life were enjoyed at Scotia village. Jonelle continued to make friends and consistently exemplified her fierce and loyal love. Jonelle delighted in her nurses, as well as the residents, pool, calling bingo and visiting the cafe.
Last March her 90th birthday was marked with a celebration at Scotia Village, surrounded by her family and friends, new and old. At her request all enjoyed a vocal recital by Anna. Jonelle was thrilled to see that Anna was wearing one of her very own handmade suits from over 50 years ago! She entered into the Lord's rest in the early morning, with her son by her side. Jonelle was a beautiful, tall, strong, determined and faithful woman. Her family and friends will miss her dearly until we see her again.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Friday, December 6th at Scotia Village. Visitation begins at 9:30 with a service at 10:30.
