Johnny Eugene Byrd, 75, formerly of Troy, passed away at home in Greensboro on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 7, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service. The family has requested for everyone to dress casually for the visitation. There will be no service; a private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Born November 5, 1948, in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late Titus and Viola Smith Byrd. Johnny served his country, stationed in Germany with the US Army, during the Vietnam War. He worked as a sewing machine mechanic for most of his career and retired as maintenance supervisor after many years at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church (Greensboro). In his spare time, Johnny enjoyed woodworking and was handy with just about anything. In retirement, he found enjoyment in cooking and baking. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and in return, they all loved their “Pa.”
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Poole Byrd of the home; daughter, Amy Byrd of Summerfield; son, John Byrd of New York, NY; sister, JoAnn Blue (Bill) of Mt. Gilead; brother, Alton Byrd (Dee) of Belvidere, TN; and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alex, and Nick. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Byrd, Leroy “Bunky” Byrd, and Lenell “Buddy” Byrd; and sisters, Geraldine Lee and Elgie Parnell.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends memorials be sent to Stoney Fork Baptist Church, 175 Stoney Fork Church Rd., Mt. Gilead, NC, 27371 or the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
