Maxton, NC
Mr. John Calvin "Pete" Hasty, 70, Maxton businessman, former mayor and N.C. House District 87 Representative, died Wednesday in Hospice Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Dianna Killian.
Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
Hasty born in Maxton on March 9, 1930, he was the son of the late William Howard and Flora Belle Currie Hasty. He graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953. He was a US Army veteran, serving in the 101st Airborne Infantry Division. He joined United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company in 1955 in Raleigh where he served as a Fire insurance specialist. He returned to Maxton in 1958 and managed the Hasty Insurance Agency, which was founded by his father in 1919. In 1973 he and his wife founded Hasty Reality.
Hasty was Mayor of Maxton from 1968 to 1970. He was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly serving from 1983 to 1989 and was assigned to the appropriations, Finance, Corporations, Public Utilities, Insurance, Law Enforcement, Banks and Thrift Institutions, Manufactures and Labor, and Commerce committees.
A member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Mormax Club, a founding member of the Maxton Jaycees served on both the Laurinburg/Maxton Airport commission and the Scotland Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees.
Survivors include his wife Betty Upchurch Hasty of the home; a son, John Hasty and wife Elizabeth of Wagram; two daughters, Flora H. McCook and husband Guy of Laurinburg, and Elizabeth Sutton and husband Stephen of Elkton, MD; three grandchildren, Currie McCook, Natalie McCook and Thomas Sutton; a niece, Talmadge R. Payne of Greensboro, and a nephew William Carter of Macon, GA.
