John Henry Moore

June 7, 1916 — November 29, 2008

Laurinburg

John H. Moore passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, in Laurinburg, NC. Born in Boiling Springs, NC, on June 7, 1916, he was the son of the late O.L. and Sue Parker Moore.

He moved with his family, at an early age, to Laurinburg, when his father became the editor of The Laurinburg Exchange. He graduated from Laurinburg High School and Presbyterian Junior College (now St. Andrews Presbyterian College). He attended Wake Forest College, before joining the Navy to serve during World War II. After graduation from OCS at Columbia University, he was commissioned to serve on the USS San Jacinto. His naval service was of particular pride to him, as he recounted stories, throughout his life, of his "sea" adventures. He truly loved his country and believed in all of the freedoms our forefathers gifted to us.

Following the War, he returned to Laurinburg, where he met the love of his life, Carolyn Lindsay. They married in June 1946, and together they raised three daughters.

He began his life-long love of journalism at The Laurinburg Exchange, writing stories that covered all aspects of the city and county. After his father's death, he wrote the popular Odds and Ends column for years, as well as served as the paper's editor and publisher. During this time, he was named Tar Heel of the Week by the Raleigh News and Observer and was active in the NC Press Association.

Perhaps, one of his most notable talents was his ability to easily recall the history of Scotland County and its families. He enjoyed sharing these stories with history-lovers, family and friends, especially the coffee group at Captain Larry's.

He will be remembered for challenging his community through his writing, believing that a strong community needs a strong newspaper to prosper. His belief that so many of our lesser fortunate citizens can be helped immensely by our caring, also, was a life-long trait. Above all, the love he had for his God and his church was of paramount importance to him, as he served in the First Baptist Church for over 80 years.

Predeceased by his wife of 60 years, he is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Karen and Clifford Burton of Wilmington; Anne and Scott Miller and Susan and Charles Wentz of Laurinburg; six grandchildren: Mary Lauren Burton, Scottie, Holland and John Miller; Lindsay Caulder and husband, John; and Charlie Wentz and wife, April; two great-granddaughters, Carolyn Caulder and Katelyn Wentz; and his sister, Mary Sue Silsand of Boiling Springs.

A service to celebrate John's life will be held at the First Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 2, at 3:00. The family will receive friends afterwards in the church fellowship hall. A private burial will be held, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, gifts to honor his memory may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 883, Laurinburg, NC 28353; Church Community Services, 108 S. Gill St., Laurinburg, NC 28352; or Scotia Village, 2200 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352.
