John Eugene Mellevold, 85, passed away on November 28, 2012 at his home.
A private Memorial Service for family only will be held at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Marshall Thomas officiating.
He was born on April, 28, 1927 to the late Commander Eugene John Mellevold and Margaret Smith Mellevold of Floral Park, New York. Devoted to the sport of running, he won a scholarship to New York University, but chose instead to join the US Army where he served in Germany during WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was at Dachau when the concentration camp was opened by Dwight Eisenhower. Following the war's end, he remained in Germany where he ran for the Army. At that time, he ran against Olympic champion, Emil Zeterpec, the only man to defeat him. Upon his return to the states, he ran in the first New York marathon as well as the Wanamaker games in Madison Square Garden. He was a member of the New York Athletic Club.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Booth Mellevold of the home, and one daughter, Karen Lekacos of Stony Brook, N.Y.
McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.
