John Phillip Hayes, Jr., 57, died Saturday, June 5, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Bostick Hayes; a son, Phil Hayes of Laurinburg; a daughter Dana Cheshire and husband, Chris, of Raleigh; his mother, Catherine Seales Hayes Marvin of Laurinburg; a brother, Edward "Blaze" Hayes of High Point; two grandchildren; Anna and Sarah Kate Cheshire of Raleigh.
Phillip was born April 30, 1953 in Dillon, SC and was also a son of the late John Phillip Hayes. He was retired as a self employed grocer. A very active member of the Laurinburg Optimist Club, Phillip served as president in 1995-66 and was named Optimist of the Year in 1992, 93, and 2003. He was the current Baseball Board Commissioner, and assisted with the operations of Optimist Park where he served thousands of youth in the summer baseball program. He was also instrumental in the Optimist chocolate sales, fish fries, and Christmas tree sales. He also cooked and catered for several events at Optimist Park.
Beyond his service with the Optimist Club, his major joys in life were spending time with his family and in later years his two granddaughters, Anna and Sarah Kate, spending time at the Bull Bay Hunting Club in Smoaks, SC, and UNC Tar Heel athletics.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
