John Clarence Davis of Scotia Village, Laurinburg, died Saturday, November 10, 2012, due to complications from heart & kidney diseases.
He was born in Person County, NC. on August 17, 1921 to Charlie W. Davis and Ella Lou Gentry Davis. His family moved to Laurinburg at age 7 years and then to Red Springs at age 8.
Having graduated from Philadelphus High School, his career began at Liberty Manufacturing, and then as a fireman at the Laurinburg/Maxton Air Force Base during WWII, purchased Buie Trading Co. in 1947 , and joined F.S. Royster in 1955 retiring in 1992 after successfully being salesman of the year for many years. He married Candis Arlene McLamb from Lumberton, NC in January 1945. They enjoyed traveling to many various countries during their 67 years of marriage. His association in the farming industry began in 1951 and continued until 2000.
John was a member of the Board of Directors of First Union National Bank in Pembroke for years. He was also a member of the Philadelphus Ritutan Club and a Free Mason. He enjoyed golfing and hunting. His membership to Buie United Methodist Church instilled in him the true meaning of serving God and the love of family. He transferred his membership to Trinity United Methodist Church, Red Springs and eventually to First United Methodist Church, Laurinburg.
John & Arlene lived in the Buie Township of Red Springs from 1946-2000 and then moved to Laurinburg.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene McLamb Davis of Laurinburg, Betty (Larry) McCarty of Fort Mill, SC; Delores (Herb) Smith and Jo Ann (James) McQueen of Laurinburg; Steve Davis of Red Springs. Grandchildren include Dawne Reddeck (Keith), Ft. Mill, SC; James Edward McQueen (Donna), Emily Lighthall (Jason), Stan Smith (Leslie), all from Laurinburg; Aimee Rice (Bryant) of Zebulon; and Stephanie Davis (Jason) also of Laurinburg. Great-grandchildren include Preston and Griffin Reddeck; Katie and Jay Lighthall; Creighton and Finley Smith, Dawson McQueen; JD, Luke & Cody Rice. Step-grandchildren are Kim McCarty of Washington, DC and Chris McCarty of Fort Mill, SC; Step-great-grandchildren, Madison and Kendall McCarty. Sisters include Ann Hasty and Molly Smith of Laurinburg; brothers are Calvin Davis of Red Springs and Bob (Ela) Davis of Laurinburg and sister-in-law, Mildred Wilson of Laurinburg in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister, Dorothy Underwood and brothers Harry & Clyde Davis.
The family will receive friends at the home of James and Jo Ann McQueen, 12200 Oakcroft Trail, Laurinburg on Monday. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McDougald Funeral Home, 305 East Church Street, Laurinburg. Funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 101 West Church Street, Laurinburg. Burial will be Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs at 2:00 p.m.
