Laurel Hill
John William Calhoun, 89, of Laurel Hill died March 24th at Scotia Village.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church in the Pines, Laurel Hill. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Cemetery in Laurinburg. Family will greet friends after the graveside service.
Born in 1919, he was a lifelong resident of Laurel Hill. Mr. Calhoun served in the Navy during World War II. He was a Scotland County Commissioner from 1976 to 1992 and Chairman from 1985 to 1989. He served on the Lumber River Council of Governments, the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, and the Four County Community Action, Inc. While a commissioner, he helped establish the Laurel Hill Fire Department. He was a lifelong Presbyterian and member of the Church in the Pines where he served as an Elder.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby McCall Calhoun; daughter Dale Biddle and husband, Bob, of Greensboro; son, John Calhoun, Jr. and wife Peggy, of Southern Pines; and three grand children, Barbara Biddle of Sherman Oaks, California, Elizabeth Biddle of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Andrew Calhoun of Charlotte, North Carolina.
