John Caldwell Calhoun, 91, died Monday, September 15, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Calhoun was born March 16, 1912, in Laurinburg to the late Lawrence Calhoun and Elizabeth Gibson Calhoun. He was the youngest of their six sons. He and each of his five brothers attended Davidson College, and went on to enter either the ministry or teaching. Over a span of seventeen years there was at least one Calhoun brother occupying room 12 Rumple Hall at Davidson. After graduating from Davidson College, Mr. Calhoun served as an educator in the public schools of Maxton, NC, Gibson, NC and China Grove, NC. During World War II, He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. In 1950, Mr. Calhoun and his wife moved to Laurinburg where he was a teacher and Principal at East Laurinburg and Central Schools until his retirement in 1975.
Mr. Calhoun was a member of the Church in the Pines in Laurel Hill, NC, a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member and Elder Emeritus.
Mr. Calhoun was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Lawrence Gibson Calhoun, Malcolm Patterson Calhoun, Daniel Malloy Calhoun, Robert Glenn Calhoun and Archie McLaurin Calhoun.
Mr. Calhoun is survived by his wife, Mary Stewart McGoogan Calhoun, daughter, Mary Calhoun Scott and husband , Ronald of Darlington, SC, son John Caldwell Calhoun, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC, two grandchildren, Julia Elizabeth Scott and Ronald Calhoun Scott, and nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday , September 17, 2003 at 1:00pm. At the Church in the Pines Presbyterian Church, Hwy. 74, Laurel Hill, NC. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service. A graveside service for the family will be held at Hillside Cemetery preceding the service.
