Mr. John Q. Byrd, 86, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Pineville Rehab and Living Center in Pineville.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal carter and the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.

He is survived by a son, Tommy Byrd of Charlotte; a brother, Curtis Byrd of Hamlet; a sister, Nell Byrd of Hamlet; a grandson, Bradley Byrd of Charlotte.

Born December 28, 1920 in Waycross, GA, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Fannilu Arrington Byrd. John was the Scotland County Manager from 1962 until his retirement in 1989. He also received the Outstanding Manager Award in 1988 for his services to Scotland County.

An active member of the Laurinburg community, he served as a past president of the Kiwanis Club and the Optimist Club where he was also a recipient of the Optimist of the Year Award. He was also a former secretary of the Laurinburg/Scotland County Chamber of Commerce, a Commander of American Legion Post 50, and a member of the VFW.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
