John Benjamin "Ben" Gibson

Mr. John Benjamin "Ben" Gibson, 77, passed into his new home in heaven on Saturday, April 5. He was born September 3, 1925 in Laurel Hill to the late Elmore and Eva G. Gibson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Elmore and Joseph McKenzie.
Ben graduated from Laurel Hill High School in 1943. He was a veteran of WWII, completing his tour of duty as a Petty Officer Boatswain 2nd Class with the US Navy. Upon returning from duty, Ben entered South Georgia Trade and Vocational School, Americus, GA from where he graduated in 1949.
Ben moved to Charlotte in March 1951 and began working for the Charlotte Transit System. He was a devoted and highly valued employee until his retirement as group leader, first shift, in 1987.
A member of Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, Ben maintained the church ball field for 25 years as a gift to God.
Ben is survived by his wife of 49 A½ years, Mary Ruth Caldwell Gibson; a son, Samuel E. Gibson of Laurel Hill; a daughter, Mary Eva Gibson and her husband, Douglas R. DeRose and granddaughter, Bailey Gibson DeRose of Charlotte.
A graveside service to honor Ben will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg officiated by the Rev. Terry Hanna of Sharon Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Tom Groome of Scotia Village.
Pallbearers will be Andy Beamon, Andy Phillips, Jody Sullivan, Wayne Gibson, Derrell Gibson, and Jack Matthews.
