John Lewis Atkins, 87, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A funeral service with military rites will be held Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Love Joy United Methodist Church in Troy, officiated by Rev. Ron Scott and Rev. Justin Wells. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Due to Covid-19, please wear a face mask or another form of face covering and practice social distancing.
Born October 5, 1934, in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late Howard Ray and Ora Blake Atkins. John Lewis was a member of Love Joy United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Post 159, and had served in the U.S. Army. He was a good husband, father, and loved his family. John never met a stranger and was a good-hearted man.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith McIntyre Atkins of the home; sons, John Charles Atkins (Sherry) and Jeffrey Scott Atkins (Dodie), both of Troy; daughter, Leigh Dawn Atkins Shank of the home; brother, Royce Atkins (Joyce Ann) of Troy; daughter-in-law, Kathy Presnell Atkins of Asheboro; and grandchildren, Lauren Atkins, Jennifer Atkins, Kelsey Atkins, Crystal Davis of Asheboro, and Erica Shank. He is preceded in death by his son, Lewis Dale Atkins; brothers, Doyle Atkins and Bobby Ray Atkins; and grandson, Bradley Thomas Atkins.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
