Hamlet

Joe Thomas Peele, Sr., 78 of Hamlet, NC passed away Friday, February 23, 2024 at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst, NC following a brief illness.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium Chapel, officiated by Rev. Harry Clark and Rev. Jeff Collins.  Burial will follow at Tabernacle Spirit Church of Ghio Cemetery in Laurel Hill.

Born March 24, 1945, he was one of eight children of the late Thomas Charles Peele and Addie Mae Clark Peele Morton.

He proudly served in the NC National Guard and retired from L.O.F. Glass Plant.  He really enjoyed collecting antiques, bluegrass gospel music, auctions, yard sales, woodworking, and tinkering around in his shop.  He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, father-in-law and friend.  But what he loved most of all was being “Papa Joe” to his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.  He loved and adored them more than anything else.

He is survived by daughter, Dawn Peele Woodard (Audie) of Laurinburg; son, Joe Thomas Peele, Jr., of Hamlet; grandchildren, Seth Watson (Page) of Hamlet, Luke Woodard of Laurinburg, Elizabeth Peele Lee (Chris) of Bennettsville, SC, Audrea Pevey, Sophia Pevey and Rylynee Gibson all of Laurinburg; great-granddaughter, Madilynn Page Watson of Hamlet; brother, Harold Peele (Patsy) of Laurinburg; sisters, Doris Morton of Laurinburg and Ruby Carnahan of San Antonio, TX; along with many nieces and nephews, who will all very much miss “Uncle Joe.”  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Guinn Peele; step-father, Dennis Morton; brother, John Walter Peele; sisters, Marjorie Peele Medlock, Bonnie Jean Peele Nemerov, and Martha Hayes Peele McDaniel; nieces, Ashley Lane McDaniel, Baby Grace McFall; and nephews, Kevin Gibson, Arlen McFall, and Daniel De La Fuente.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium and other times at the residence of his daughter, Dawn Peele Woodard, 8180 Glasgow Drive, Laurinburg, NC.

“We love you Daddy and Papa Joe.  We miss you more than any words could ever describe.  You will be in our hearts and thoughts everyday.”
