Mr. J. Nelson Gibson, 86, of Scotia Village and formerly of Gibson died Monday, April 17, at Scotia Village.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Gibson United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Harold Salmon. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Smith Gibson; three daughters, Josephine Fisher of Surf City, Margie Whitlock of Gibson, and Anne Tang of Marietta, GA; two sisters, Elizabeth Tysor of Moyock and Catherine Lang of Greenville; 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Born September 14, 1918 in Gibson, he was a son of the late Jeptha Nelson and Martha Kilgo Gibson.
Nelson graduated from Duke University in 1939 and did post graduate work at Georgetown University and served four years with the US Army during World War II where he was a cryptanalyst at the Supreme Allied Headquarters in Europe.
Following the war he returned to Gibson where he successfully changed farming practices and was a noted cotton farmer. He also served on the boards of Cotton, Inc. and the National Cotton Council.
