Jean Tanner Groome, 89, beloved wife of the late Rev. Thomas M. Groome, Jr., of Laurinburg, North Carolina, passed away on February 1, 2013.
The memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Neal Carter and Elizabeth Forester will be officiating. Private interment will follow the memorial service at Groometown United Methodist Church Cemetery, Greensboro, North Carolina, later on the same day.
Jean was born in Lansing, Michigan, on April 18, 1923. After graduating from high school, she attended Houghton College in New York, where she met her future husband to whom she would be married for more than 67 years. Jean and Tom were married on February 20, 1943, a union that lasted until Tom's death in January 2011. Jean was a homemaker, having reared four children, and was a tremendous helpmate to her husband throughout his career. She was a gifted gourmet cook and hostess and actively assisted her husband in entertaining senior Defense Department officials and other dignitaries throughout his career. She enjoyed particularly serving as a choir director in various churches pastored by her husband during his career. She also served as a Red Cross volunteer during various assignments.
Jean is survived by her two oldest children, Thomas, III, and David, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and other family and friends. Jean was preceded in death by her two youngest children, Michael and Deborah.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be given to Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, 600 W. Church st., Laurinburg, NC 28352.
