James Randall Small

James Randall Small, 87, a proud veteran of the United States Army passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022 at his residence.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Fayetteville, NC, officiated by Rev. Daniel Luther.

Born June 3, 1935, in Huntington County, IN, he was a son of the late Geraldine Stell and William Small. After graduating Westfield High School in New Jersey at age 17, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his career, he completed selection and was selected for special operations. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of First Sergeant. Some of his military awards and decorations included: Parachutist Badge, Good Conduct, 4th Award, National Defense Service Award, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device; second tour. As a First Sergeant assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster for Meritorious Service. First Sergeant Small also served as a member of the Color Guard for J. F. Kennedy’s funeral.

Our father gave 20 years of faithful and honorable service. He inspired those with whom he worked. He commanded respect and loyalty to the very end of his life. Job well done, Dad. We will miss you and honor you. You taught us well.

He is survived by his son, James “Randy” R. Small, Jr. (Debbie) of Pee Dee; daughters, Kimberly Payseur of Charlotte, and Catrina Nash (Kimmy) of Albemarle; brothers, Roger Schreck (Gretchen) of CA and Mark Small of AZ; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Peggy Ann Gillum Small, and his brother, Rick Schreck.
