James William Nelson

Rockingham

James W. Nelson, 84, went to be with our Lord Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Hospice Haven in Rockingham.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Nelson; two daughters, Gloria Crane (Bill) of Ellerbe, and Cindy Nelson and fiance, Luke Campbell of Rockingham; two sons, William Nelson of Indiana and Bob Nelson (Rhonda) of Rockingham; four sisters, Ruth Hall, Peggy Hammonds, Betty Jean Troxler and Carolyn Greene; mother-in-law, Hazel Todd; 5 grandchildren, Melanie Joy (Rick) of Vancouver, WA, Wendi McNitt (Curt) of Sublimity, OR, Garry Williams (Chanterelle) of Portland, OR, Taylor Wall and fiance Omar Fhamy of the home and Robert Nelson, Jr. of Rockingham; seven great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; among multiple foster children, Stephen Brown, David Harding, Joseph Jeffery, Ethan Tindle, Jess Poff, Travis Sounders, Daniel Williams, Jeremy and Marissa Berry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Doris Nelson; two brothers, Johnny Boy Nelson and Wayne "Joe" Nelson; two sisters, Mary Frances Craven and Avis Craven; one foster child, Carl Justice "CJ", Jr.
Mr Nelson served in the armed forces during the Berlin Airlift where he earned a Bronze Medal. He served the public of Richmond County for many years as a butcher. Mr. Nelson served God in a few churches over the years in many ways including being a Deacon and Sunday School teacher serving his final years at Roberdel Baptist Church. He humbly served God as a foster parent to many children through the years, but most of all he was a devoted husband and father who guided his family in the way of our Lord.
In celebration of his life there will be a memorial ar Roberdel Baptist Church on Thursday, April 16, at 7:00 pm. The family will receive friends and family from 6 - 7 pm prior to the memorial service.
