James Lawrence Elliott

Jim Elliott, 68, died May 30, 2012 at Scotia Village.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 4 at 2:00 PM at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.

Jim was born in Montgomery, Alabama August 18, 1943 to Laurence and Gladys Ross Elliott, the oldest of four children.

A 1961 graduate of Jenkins High School in Savannah, Georgia, Jim continued his education at Presbyterian College with a BS in Business Administration. He was a valued member of the Blue Hose football and baseball teams. It was at Presbyterian College that Jim met and married Beth Brooks Elliott of Hamlet, NC.

Following college Jim moved his family to Pittsburgh, PA where he played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers as a punter for the 1967/68 season. Jim's love of sports was a major influence in his life. He was a team player in all he did. An avid runner, tennis player and golfer, he encouraged his family to be involved in sports and often supported them as a coach.

Laurinburg became home in 1984 with employment as plant manager with Reeves Southeastern wire. In 1990 Jim became owner of Burch Industries where he worked until his early retirement in 2008. He was proud of his ability to provide jobs to those who worked for him and Burch was an extended family.

Jim was a member of the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Laurinburg Rotary Club. He will be remembered by his Presbyterian College friends who have been faithful in maintaining friendships through the years and by his golf friends who shared his Saturday mornings with the shoot-out.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, Jim was surrounded by his family and friends as he endured this disease that took his life. He is survived by his wife, Beth Brooks Elliott of 46 years, three children, Kim Autry of Cumming, GA, Wade Elliott, of Valrico, FL, and Sarah Litman of Fowler, Ohio; six grandchildren; his mother, Gladys Ross Elliott of Columbia, SC; a brother Gary Elliott of Florence, AL; sisters, Angela Mishoe of Chapin, SC and Lisa Chism of Columbia, SC. He is preceded in death by his father, Laurence Edward Elliott April 12, 2012.
