James DeBerry (J.D.) Gibson, 91, of Laurinburg, NC, died on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Scotland Hospice’s Morrison Manor in Laurinburg.  J.D. was born April 11, 1925 in Gibson, NC to the late Will Harris Gibson and Josephine Ellen Liles Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, July 1, 2016 at St. John United Methodist Church, Hwy 79 near Gibson with Pastor Harold Hunt officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery in Gibson.  Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the church.  Pallbearers are Ben Coulter, Willie Gibson, Carl Tindall, Thomas McKay, Bill Foland, and Freddie Cottingham.  Honorary pallbearers are staff and volunteers of Scotland Hospice.

J.D. is survived by his son, Gene Gibson of Laurinburg; sister, Nell Robinson of Wilmington, NC; daughter-in-law Bonnie Gibson of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Jenny Harter (Daryl) of Florence, SC, Becky Coulter (Ben) of Wilson, NC; Wendell Huggins (Anne) of Mullins, SC, Cheryl Ryals (Bruce) of Charleston, SC, Rhonda Young (Andy) of Tampa, FL; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents listed above, J.D. was preceded in death by: his wife of 49 years, Ruby Floyd Gibson, their son, Jerry Gibson; and seven siblings.

J.D. was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy.  In 2009, he received an American Heroes Award honoring heroes in Scotland County.  In 1998, he began volunteering with Scotland County Hospice where many people over the years were privileged recipients of his unconditional love and caring spirit.  In 1999, Governor James B. Hunt presented J.D. with the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in North Carolina.  He was an avid fan of Duke athletic teams.
