James Murray "Buddy" Askew, 79, of 365 North Florence St. died Thursday, March 22, at the Edwin Morgan Center.


A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Carl Redding.


He is survived a son, Murray Askew of Richmond, VA; two daughters, Katherine McQueen of Maxton and Mary Stevens of Garner; a sister, Elizabeth Wash of Beaver Dam, VA; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.


Born September 24, 1921 in Hanover County, VA, he was a son of the late Joseph V. and Mattie Harper Askew. He served with the US Army in World War II and was the owner and operator of Maxton Service Company for over 30 years. He was also a Maxton volunteer fireman.
