Mr. James Herman Benton, 87, formerly of 511 James St. died Wednesday, July 19, at Pinehurst Nursing Center in Pinehurst.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Revs. Lewis McLean and Rita Cole. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery with military rites.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Tatum Benton; a son, Herman Benton, Jr. of Laurinburg; a daughter, Marianne Bardel of Pinehurst; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Born March 17, 1913 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Eugene and Frances Lee Benton. He served in the US Army in World War II, was captured in Italy by the Germans and spent 13 months as a POW in Germany.
Herman was very active in American Legion Baseball, serving as a Post Athletic Officer, Area Commissioner, recruiter, spokesman and an interim coach. He was elected to the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.
Herman was also a retired southeastern North Carolina sales manager for The News and Observer.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
