Maxton

J. Knox Thompson, 80, passed away Friday, January 29, 2016.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Carl Redding. Visitation will follow in the church.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Register Ensminger Thompson; his sons, Joe Thompson (Sherrie) and Arthur Ensminger (Susan) of Laurinburg; his daughters, Ann Knox Thompson of Wagam, Sherri Veshinski (John) of Laurinburg, and Debra Ensminger of Carthage; his grandsons, Nicholas Thompson, Brandon Veshinski, Taylor Veshinski; his granddaughters, Rebecca Thompson, Elizabeth Nangauta (Jesse), Hannah Thompson, and Mallorie Veshinski; his great grandsons, Anthony Nangauta and Joseph Nangauta; his great granddaughter, Lauren Nangauta.

Knox graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1953 and enlisted in the US Army. Following his service in the military he worked at Prince Mill in East Laurinburg before beginning a 35 year career with the US Postal Service as a mail carrier.

Despite being raised fatherless, from the late 1950's until the mid 1960's Knox was the overseer, adult chaperon, and security - all rolled into one - for the Laurinburg teenage hangout known as the "Canteen." He became a mentor and confidante for many of the teens that frequented the Canteen.

Knox was an avid golfer and had 11 holes-in-one to his credit and won the Pinehurst Putter Boy trophy six times. He was also an avid fan of the UNC Tar Heels in any sport and the New York Yankees. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather recalled as being stubborn – in a good way.

On June 25, 2010 Knox was born again into a true Christian relationship, and became a witness to many.

Memorial contributions are requested for the First Baptist Church, PO Box 507, Maxton, NC 28364.
