J. Mills Kirkpatrick

March 30, 1919 — October 9, 2015

Junius Mills Kirkpatrick, age 96, passed away on October 9, 2015 in Johnson City, Tennessee. A graveside service to celebrate his Christian life will be held on October 17, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Oak Grove Cemetery in Maxton, North Carolina.

Mills Kirkpatrick was born in Lillington, North Carolina on March 30, 1919. He was the son of Rev. Gurdon Foster and Katie McNeill Kirkpatrick. His father was pastor of several local Presbyterian churches and Mills lived in the Manse of Old Laurel Hill Church most of his childhood. He moved to Maxton and lived there until the 1980's.

Mills was a graduate of Laurinburg High School and an Alumnus of Presbyterian Junior College (later St. Andrews Presbyterian College). He later served as a member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Alumni Board. In retirement, he continued his interest in the N. C. Presbyterian Historical Society as Book Chairman channeling books on Presbyterian history to the church history collection at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

His first marriage of 41 years was to Doris Henderson Cashwell. They had two children, Betty K. Tysinger (Gary) of Johnson City, Tennessee and J. ("Jay") Mills Kirkpatrick, Jr. (Brigitte) of Red Springs, North Carolina. He had two grandchildren, Heather Lynn Tysinger and Stuart McNeill Tysinger (Jeannette) of Johnson City, Tennessee. His great-grandson is Lucas Kirkpatrick Tysinger of Johnson City, Tennessee; He is also survived by one sister, Helen K. Middleton, who lives at Scotia Village; his stepson, Neil Carmichael Collins, III (Anne) of Chester, SC; his step-daughter, Judith Collins Millar of High Point, NC; his step-grandson, Brendan L. McColl of Australia; and his step-granddaughter, Ashleigh C. Mullinax of Washington, DC..

He was a Board Member of the Gilbert Patterson Library in Maxton, North Carolina for 12 years. Earlier, he had been elected to the Maxton Town Board and served as the Building Inspector. As a World War II veteran, he remained active in the local American Legion Post #117. In retirement, he published a journal of post-combat experiences in the Philippine Islands.

For 38 years, he was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. In 1961, he served as a Commissioner to the Church's General Assembly in Dallas, Texas. In Maxton Presbyterian Church, he also served as a Deacon, Superintendent of the Sunday School Department and a
Choir member.

In 1985, he married Dorothy Dove Collins. Following his retirement from the Libbey-Owens-Ford Company, they moved from their home in Maxton to the Highland Farms Retirement Community at Black Mountain, North Carolina. In 2008, they moved to High Point, North Carolina. Dorothy D. Collins passed away in July 2014. In 2015, Mills moved to Colonial Hill Retirement Center in Johnson City, TN to be closer to his family.

Mills Kirkpatrick was preceded in death by his parents Rev. G. F. and Katie M. Kirkpatrick; his first wife Doris C. Kirkpatrick; his second wife Dorothy C. Kirkpatrick; his brothers Palmer M. Kirkpatrick and Rev. Charles E. Kirkpatrick; and his sister Katie K. Snyder.
