Hubert Grey Sewell

Mr. Hubert Grey Sewell, 98, of 713 Anson Ave. passed away Wednesday, April 15 at the Edwin Morgan Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Quinton Covington. Burial with military rites will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Grey loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Erma Lucas Sewell; a daughter, Phyllis Sewell Clark and husband, Robbie of Laurinburg; two grandchildren, Christi Bardel Thompson and husband, Scott of Spartanburg, SC and Jeff Bardel of Tulsa, OK; three great grandchildren, Taylor, Maggie and Luke Thompson of Spartanburg; two step-grandsons, Robert Clark and wife, Ginger of Hagerstown, MD and Chris Clark and wife, Tina of Hamlet, and five step great grandchildren.

Born in Bladen County on January 18, 1911, he was the son of the late William Arthur and Alice Culbreth Sewell. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

Grey loved his country and proudly served as a PFC in the 180th Engineer Heavy Pontoon Battalion in the US Army. He retired from the North Carolina Highway Department Commission after 35 years of loyal service.

Grey was a dedicated member of Central United Methodist Church where he served in the adult choir and the Men's Club. He was a member of the Administrative Council, a member of the Men's Sunday school class, and served as a trustee. He was on the building committee and was an active participant in various areas of church work.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium and other times at 12481 Ormsby Drive.
