Herald Hall Hughes, Jr., of Laurinburg, NC died on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Scotia Village. He was 87 years old.
Herald was born in Ardmore, Ok. March 23, 1928 to the late Herald Hall Hughes and Kathleen Compere Hughes. He was the oldest of two children.
Herald attended Oklahoma State University for two years and then graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950. He married Josephine Lois Brooks July 7, 1951. Their early married life landed them in Greensboro, NC. After brief moves to Frankfurt, KY and Knoxville, TN, they spent 24 years building their lives together in Orlando, Fl – where they had their 4 wonderful children. With two children in college and two at home, career changes transferred them to the greater Detroit, MI area. In Michigan, just as in Florida, they put down roots and became very involved in their children's lives, their church and their community. Retirement brought them back south to North Carolina – first to Union County and finally to Laurinburg. No matter where they lived, Herald became actively involved in his church, his Rotary Club and anything that had to do with his children or grandchildren.
Herald spent 40 years as a successful actuary. His career included time with Jefferson Pilot, and then as a vice president with National Standard Life Insurance and Mutual of Detroit. In between those companies, he worked with two start-up agencies which can attribute their success partly to the fact that Herald was on their leadership teams.
Herald was a devoted Christian embracing the principles of servant leadership. In each of his communities, he and his family found a church home and served it with passion. He shared his gifts and talents of strong financial skills and helped many churches improve their budgets and stewardship practices. He was an ordained deacon in the Southern Baptist tradition, an elder in the Presbyterian Church and dedicated lay person in the United Methodist Church. For years, he used his robust bass voice to honor God from the choir loft.
He was a dedicated Rotarian – being recognized as a 4-time Paul Harris Fellow and earning perfect attendance for 40 years. He was a die-hard University of Michigan fan – engaging in fun rivalries and competitions in every community in which he lived.
Herald was a devoted husband, and a proud and strong father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Josephine Brooks Hughes; by his children, and grandchildren – Herald H Hughes, III "Bear" (wife, Becca and children Rachel and Walt); Kathleen Hughes Kilbourne (husband, Ed; children Brooke Saunders Harris (BJ), Jenny Kilbourne, Amanda Kilbourne Richardson (Jack); Marijo Hughes Swanson (husband, Steve; children Justin and Ryan) and Heather Ann Hughes. Herald is also survived by his great-grandchildren, who he was blessed to have known and loved - Bradley Harris, Allison Reese and Ethan Reece.
Herald was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Dr. William Lyon Hughes.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, July 18 at 2:00 pm in the Morris Morgan Entertainment Center at Scotia Village. Visitation with the family will immediately follow the service. Arrangements are being handled by McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to The Scotia Village Foundation (2200 Elm Avenue Laurinburg, NC 28352), First United Methodist Church (101 W. Church Street Laurinburg, NC), or the charity of your choice.
