Laurinburg
Mrs. Helen Sherrill Gustafson, 84, of Laurinburg, died Tuesday, December 24, at Scotia Village.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Scotia Village MMEC, officiated by Dr. Neal Carter. Burial will follow in Big Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Fayetteville.
She is survived by: her son, Glenn L. Gustafson of Columbus, OH; her daughter, Sheryl Dawson of Morgantown, WV; two grandchildren, Laura Klepper of Goldsboro, N. C. and Travis Dawson III of Los Angeles, CA; and her sister Louise Vaughan of Jacksonville, FL.
Born July 5, 1929 in Fayetteville, N.C, she was the second daughter of the late Harry Louis Sherrill and Mary Alice (Davis) Sherrill. She was a graduate of Flora MacDonald College and earned her master's degree in Religious Education from Duke University.
She taught at Flora MacDonald College, St. Andrews College, and served as adjunct professor at UNC-Charlotte and ECU. She established the summer high school program for gifted at Western Carolina University. She was chosen by Governor Hunt to direct the Governor's School East at St. Andrews. She directed the special education and guidance programs for the Fort Bragg Schools. She taught the first group of Scottish dancers who went to Scotland High School. She started the gifted program for Scotland County which was the first one in the state. With her husband, Dr. Robert K. Gustafson, she started the Friends of the Library for the Scotland Memorial Library.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.
