Helen James Odom Adams passed away Thursday, May 26th at Morrison Manor surrounded by her family. A lifetime resident of Laurinburg born December 17, 1922, she is preceded in death by her husband of forty four years, Claude J. Adams, Jr; her parents, Charles W. and Katie Medlin Odom, Sr.; and her siblings, Charles Odom, Jr., Norman Odom, Mayme O. Bristow, Harold (Boots) Odom; and her son-in-law, Bill McGirt.
A celebration of her life will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 28, at the First Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Adams graduated from Women's College now UNC-Greensboro in 1940. Her career included Morgan Mills, John Blue Company, and Charles Craft.
She also served Scotland County by volunteering with Hospice, the Pilot Club, Literacy Council, and Meals on Wheels. She was recognized in 1994 by the State of North Carolina as a Senior Volunteer of the Year for her many services to her community.
As a lifetime active member of the First Baptist Church, she served on many committees with pride and commitment to the congregation that she loved so dearly. She credited her church family with instilling faith and the real values of life. Missionary work was especially important to her as she demonstrated with a mission trip to South Korea in 1982.
Mrs. Adams is survived by her four children; Faye McGirt, Dr. William "Jep" Adams (Carol), Carol Morgan (Ed), and Susan Shatswell (Brian); ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, her sisters-in-law, Linda Odom and Molly Adams McColman, plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
