Glenn Stearns Bingham

April 5, 1926 — January 11, 2008

Dateline: Laurel Hill

Mr. Glenn Stearns Bingham, age 81, of Ida Mill Road died Friday, January 11, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines officiated by the Rev. Alexander B. “Sandy” Williams. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the church fellowship hall.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Wiles Bingham; two sons, Stearns Bingham and wife, Mary Anna of Charlotte and Richard Bingham and wife, Maria of Laurinburg; a daughter, Beth Bingham of Vero Beach, FL; two brothers, Fred Bingham of Clarksville, VA and David Bingham of Raleigh; three grandchildren; Daniel Bingham, Hannah Bingham, and Jordan Bingham.

Glenn was born April 5, 1926 in Raleigh, a son of the late William G. and Grace Stearns Bingham. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946. After the war he graduated from NC State University and became to director of the recreation program for Morgan Mills in Laurel Hill.

He then began a 30 year career in teaching with the Scotland County Schools where he received a National Science Foundation grant and attended NC State in 1965 and 66. After retiring from teaching he spent many hours volunteering with school children teaching them about plants, nature, books and swimming.

Glenn could be described as a true naturalist. He knew all plants in North Carolina by common and scientific names and their uses, the topography of southeastern North Carolina, and was a noted authority of Carolina Bays. He encouraged all to live with nature and learn from it. He also loved fly fishing with his sons and was a boat maker.

Most of all Glenn loved his family; his wife, children, and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed their annual trip to Florida to visit their daughter every February.

Memorials may be made to the Church in the Pines, PO Box 69, Laurel Hill, NC 28351 or Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
