Dr. Giles Lathern Cloninger, Jr

Dr. Giles Lathern Cloninger, Jr., 80, of 301 Dogwood Lane died Tuesday, March 6, at Sandhills Regional Medical Center.


Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. thursday at the First Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev Shirley Hutchins and Dr. Gene D. Miller, Jr.. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park.


He is survived by his wife, Judy Lomax Cloninger; a daughter, Dody Cloninger Phillips and husband, Jim of Fayetteville,; two sons, Giles L. Cloninger, III of Greensboro and Chess Cloninger and wife, Joy of Wagram; one sister, Jean Cockrell of Charlotte; one brother, earl Cloninger of Denver, NC; three grandchildren, Hayley and Molly Phillips of Fayetteville and Ray Cloninger of Hamlet.


Born December 13, 1920 in Charlotte, he was a son of the late Giles L. and Margaret Glover Cloninger. a graduate of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Dr. Cloninger received his medical degree from Bowman-Gray school of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. A US Army veteran of World War II, Dr. Cloninger set up his beneral family practice in Hamlet on January 1, 1956 which he continued until his retirement on September 8, 1998.


A member and former elder with the First Presbyterian Church, Dr. Cloninger was active in his community serving as a past chairman of the Richmond County Board of Education, Past President of the SCLRR Employees Golf Association, Past President of the seaboard Coast Line Surgeons Association, Past President of the Medical Alumni of Bowman-Gray school of Medicine of Wake Forest University, and a member of the Board of Trustees at Richmond Community College from 1972 until 1985.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the services as the church.
