Gertrude Hearn

December 5, 1927 — April 17, 2018

Gertrude Bounds Hearn, 90, of Laurinburg, died peacefully following an extended illness, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. She was born December 5, 1927 in Robeson County to Dewey and Lellon Culbreth Bounds.

Gertrude was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church for many years, and enjoyed working with the annual Ingathering, the Stephen Ministry and helping with the Food Bank and of course being a member of the Betsy Sanford Sunday School Class. Over the years, Mrs. Hearn turned her joy of receiving cards into a ministry of sending cards to others. Having a true servant’s heart she looked for ways to serve others.

Mrs. Hearn, known for her genuine sweet spirit, was very devoted to her family loving them fiercely, but loving Jesus above all. She would not think of missing a special time with her children or grandchildren. “Mimi”, as she was affectionately called, was famous for the tea cakes she made for all her grandchildren. Nothing pleased her more than a house full of family for holidays and special occasions. She encouraged us with her words and presence for big things and small, and motivated us to love each other always.

She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Marshall B. Hearn, her parents, Dewey and Lellon Bounds, one brother, Bobby Bounds and his wife Neecie, one sister, Grace B. Ivey and her husband, Kelly.

Mrs. Hearn is survived by three sons, Dennis Hearn and wife Billie, David Hearn and wife Debbie, and Greg Hearn and wife Anita; two daughters, Pat White and husband Basil and Ellen Crouse and husband Bruce; and two brothers, C.D. Bounds and wife Dot and Charles Bounds and wife Miriam.  She has eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Terry Hunt and Rev. Jonathan Jefferies officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the church fellowship hall.
