Georgia Anne (Drake) Dye

Georgia Anne Drake Dye, 85, died March 11 in Laurinburg, North Carolina after a period of declining health.

Georgia was born June 30, 1935 in Chancellor, South Dakota to William Jackson and Edna Anne Bultena Drake. Her first of dozens of moves was at the age of 3 to Long Beach, California.

During the years between the Great Depression and World War II, many in Georgia’s life moved from South Dakota to southern California in search of work. Georgia was blessed to be surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and long-time family friends, all of whom played important roles in her life.

Georgia attended Occidental College, Santa Ana Junior College, and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in elementary education. From there, wanting to see the world, she and her friend Marlene moved to Davenport, Iowa, where Georgia taught her first 5th grade class and where she would meet her future husband, Bob, at a Methodist/Episcopalian young professionals Bible study.

Married at First Presbyterian Church (Anaheim, California) in 1958, Bob and Georgia would live in 14 towns – sometimes multiple times – in 7 states during their marriage. Their daughter, Darcy, was born in Pennsylvania and would move with them 9 of those times.

As a lifelong caregiver, Georgia made friends all over the country and with her true servant’s heart kept in touch through visits, cards, and calls. While she never embraced the technological benefits of email, she appreciated all traditional forms of communication. Her favorite activities included book clubs, gardening, bridge, church, tennis, golf, and special trips with Darcy. One favorite trip was to France where they were able to visit Utah Beach in Normandy, where Georgia’s dad landed during the WW11 American invasion.

Georgia was predeceased by her parents, her sister Ellen Jo Drake Tuell, and her husband Bob. She is survived by her daughter Darcy Ellen Dye Bowers and her husband John; brother-in law Gary Tuell and his wife Fran; 2 nephews, 1 niece, 4 cousins, and their families.
