12:00 - 2:00 pm (Eastern time)
Gene Owen Thomas, Jr., age 79, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium, located at 305 W Church St, Laurinburg, North Carolina. This gathering will be an occasion to honor Gene’s life, celebrate his enduring legacy, and offer comfort to those who knew and loved him.
Born on November 20, 1946, in Ft. Benning, Georgia, Gene's life was marked by dedication, adventure, and an enduring love for his family and the world around him.
A proud graduate of Fayetteville High School’s class of 1965, Gene answered the call of duty by serving honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His commitment to his country was a testament to his character and sense of responsibility.
Professionally, Gene excelled as a project manager for telecommunications, a career that afforded him the remarkable opportunity to travel extensively. His journeys took him to vibrant places such as Venezuela and China, as well as many corners across the United States and the world. These travels not only enriched his life but also combined seamlessly with his personal passion for exploration. He especially cherished his trips to Hawaii and held a profound affection for Egypt, a place he considered his favorite. Always with a camera in hand, Gene captured treasured moments along the way, and his sweet tooth was a lighthearted hallmark among those who knew him.
Gene’s family remained the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his beloved granddaughter, Zanna Nunnally Johnson and her husband Justin of Jacksonville, North Carolina; his brother Randall B. Thomas of Fredericksburg, Virginia; his sister Leslie Thomas Ryan of Florence, Alabama; and his brother-in-law Ben Norton and his wife Pearl of Maxton. Gene was also a cherished uncle to numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward his memory with affection.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Rae Register and Gene Owen Thomas; his wife of 40 years, Annie Ruth Norton Thomas; his step-son Stephen Ray Nunnally; and his sister Beverly Ann Thomas.
