Gary Lee "Smitty" Smith, 73, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Carolinas Health Care in Concord.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Karen S. Phillips (Steve) and Sandra S. McLaughlin of Laurinburg; his brothers, Nelson Smith, Jr., David Smith (Carol) and Michael Smith (Jackie); his sisters, Gladys "Billie" Willey, Pam Johnson, and Yvonne Worden; his grandchildren. Heather Phillips, Brittany McLaughlin, Shellie Pottle (Randy), Jessica Phillips, and Chloe McLaughlin; his great grandchildren; Riley Phillips, Brayden Locklear, Harrison Pottle, Mariyah Locklear, Mason Oxendine, Kaiser Pottle; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives & friends.
Born August 27, 1942 in Zanesville, OH, he was a son of the late Nelson Ernest and Violet Marie Gassaway Smith. Smitty served two tours in Vietnam with the US Army and later served as a mechanic with McLaurin McArthur Chevrolet before joining Western Electric and later Southern Bell, Bellsouth, & AT&T. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Norma Webb.
In his spare time he enjoyed most sports including fishing, softball, and bowling.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
