Mr. Linwood Roberts, 62, of 405 Feltus Blvd died Saturday, February 14, at his residence after a brief illness.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Hilda Bowyer Roberts; a daughter, Amy Ostrander and husband, Christian of Jonesboro, AR; two sons, Linwood Roberts and wife, Ashley of Greenville, MS and Chad Roberts of the home; his grandchildren, Caitlin Ostrander, Wynn and Hampton Roberts, and Lawson Smith; one brother, Wayne Roberts and wife, Judy of Aynor, SC; five sisters, Ernestine Morris and husband, Dewey of Timmonsville, SC, Doris Hammond and husband, Jimmy of Nichols, SC, Robbie Cameron-Bell and husband, Don of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Linda Phipps and husband, Dennis of Loris, SC, and Bertie Wood and husband, Jerry of Laurel Hill; his mother-in-law, Essie C. Bowyer of Laurinburg.
Born September 27, 1941 in Horry County, SC he was a son of the late James Archie and Winnie Shelley Roberts.
He was drafted for service to his country in 1964 and served with the US Army, First Calvary air to ground communications unit. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the Central Highland where in October and November 1965 he was active in the attack near Plei Me in the Ia Drang Valley; known as the first full-scale engagement with the North Vietnamese army. Receiving several commendations and medals, he was honorably discharged in December 1965.
His career involved 39 years in cotton research, beginning with McNair Seed Company, Northrup-King Company, and later Seed Source, Inc. in Stoneville, MS from which he recently retired.
