Frances Ada Terrell Shannon

December 5, 1921 — August 31, 2015

Her life began December 5, 1921 in Gaston County, NC, and whilst still a child the world was hit by the Great Depression.

Frances Ada Terrell's family moved from boarding house to boarding house as jobs opened and closed with the job market. A home or a permanent resident was just a dream. With little to use, young Frances honed her creative skills in sewing and doll making. What she lacked in material possessions were more than compensated by her love and appreciation for family and others.

Raised as a Southern Baptist, she later married her handsome army doctor George, son of a Presbyterian minister, and became a Presbyterian.

Shaped by her early foundation, Frances made the loving home she always wanted - with her husband and five children, a home filled with love. As if her husband and family were not enough, she served as an active community volunteer with the Red Cross Bloodmobile, the American Cancer Society, the Scotland County Medical Auxiliary, her garden club, and with the DAR (Stamp Defiance Chapter in Wilmington, NC).

Following her husband's retirement, they moved to Little River where she returned to her Southern Baptist roots, bringing along her husband with her. During this time Frances furthered her doll making skills by pursuing certification in porcelain doll making. Eventually they moved to Wilmington to be closer to three of their daughters. This is where they became active members in Wrightsboro Baptist. Frances dove deeper into her genealogy and became a DAR member along with two daughters. Frances and George returned to Laurinburg and the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where they had many years of fond memories of raising their children. Frances had been lovingly cared for daily at home by her daughter Sandra with lots of weekly visits from her other daughters. She adored her girls and her only son, George from MT, who visited with her recently. Hospice started helping in March and the last 3 days she was taken to Morrison Manor where she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Frances died peacefully at 8:45 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2015.

Leaving behind are her husband, Dr. George W. Shannon; her daughters, Sandra Hoffman (Randy) of Laurinburg, Ann Jenkins (Len), Karen Shannon, and Carol Moore of Wilmington; her son, Dr. George Shannon, Jr. of Billings, MT; her grandchildren, Jim Heller (Tracey), Laura Polk, Bryan Heller (Jane), Grey Davis (Rebekah), Kristy Smith (Nick), Kent Moore, George W. Shannon, III, and Hunter Shannon; and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Shannon.
